Soundbar or Proper Speakers: We've Installed Both. Here's What We Actually Think.

Garth Stivey |

Not a spec comparison. A real answer — from people who've seen both in hundreds of homes.

If you've got a soundbar, this isn't an attack on your taste.

Soundbars are genuinely good products. They're a real upgrade on TV speakers, they look clean, and for a lot of homes they make complete sense. No argument there.

But if you've ever sat in a room with a proper speaker setup — real left and right channels, a centre, a sub — you'll know there's a gap. A noticeable one.

The question is whether that gap is worth closing. And the honest answer is: it depends on your home, your habits, and what you actually want from the experience.

We've installed both. A lot of both. Here's what we think.

Let's give the soundbar its due

A soundbar does a few things really well — and it's worth being clear about that before we go anywhere else.

It's simple. One cable to the TV, maybe one to a sub if it comes with one. You're up and running in ten minutes with no expertise needed. We sell & install soundbars all the time, so not knocking them.

It looks clean. One unit under the TV, nothing else visible. For people who care about how their lounge room looks — and most people do — that matters.

And it genuinely sounds better than built-in TV speakers. The audio is wider, dialogue is clearer, and bass has at least some presence. For casual TV watching and streaming, a good soundbar does the job.

So why would you go further?

Because soundbars hit a ceiling — and you'll feel it

Here's the thing about soundbars: the technology has a fundamental limit. No matter how much you spend, a soundbar is still a single unit pointed at you from one direction. The surround sound it creates is simulated — clever processing tricks that approximate the feeling of sound coming from different parts of the room.

It's impressive for what it is. But it isn't the real thing.

With proper speakers, the sound doesn't come from one place. It comes from around you. A centre channel locks dialogue to the screen so every word is clear. Left and right speakers create a genuine soundstage. Rear speakers place you inside the scene, not in front of it. And a dedicated subwoofer doesn't just add bass — it adds the kind of low-end weight you feel in your chest during a classic car chase where the hero jumps the car over the bridge to save the girl.

That's not a subtle difference. The first time most people hear a properly set up speaker system, they don't just hear it, they feel it and struggle to go back.

The side-by-side — what actually changes

Here's an honest comparison across the things that matter most:

Soundbar

Proper Speakers

Installation

Plug in and done. No expertise needed.

Needs setup — easier with a professional.

Sound quality

Good for the price. Hits a ceiling fast.

Scales with your budget. No ceiling.

Surround sound

Simulated. Sound still comes from one point.

Real. Sound wraps around the room.

Bass

Limited. Some have built-in sub, rarely satisfying.

Add a dedicated sub. Feels it, not just hear it.

Dialogue clarity

Decent — better than TV speakers.

Noticeably clearer. Especially with a centre channel.

Looks

Clean. One unit, tucks under the TV.

More gear, but can look incredible when done right.

Renters

Great option. Easy to move.

Wireless options available — more flexible than ever.

Price entry point

Lower — good options from $300.

Higher — but the gap closes fast at mid-range.

What 'proper speakers' actually costs

This is where a lot of people assume it's out of reach. It usually isn't.

The entry point for a proper 2-channel setup — a stereo amplifier and a pair of bookshelf speakers — sits around the same price as a mid-range soundbar. The difference in sound quality at that price point is significant.

Step up to a full AV receiver with a centre channel, surround speakers and a sub, and you're looking at more investment. But you're also looking at a completely different experience — one that genuinely rivals what you'd get in a commercial cinema.

The key is buying the right things in the right order. You don't need to do it all at once. Start with a 2-channel setup. Add a sub. Add surround speakers when you're ready. A good system grows with you.

How to know which one is right for you

A soundbar probably makes sense if:

You're renting and don't want a complex setup you'll need to move

Your room is small — a soundbar covers it well without overpowering the space

You watch mostly casual TV and streaming, not films you want to really experience

Budget is the primary constraint right now — a good soundbar is a smart starting point

Proper speakers are worth it if:

You own your home and want a setup that lasts — this is a long-term investment

Movies, sport or music are a real part of how you use your lounge room

You've already got a soundbar and feel like something's missing — you're right

You want to actually feel the difference, not just hear a marginal improvement

The GL Pro Sound take

We sell both. We install both. And we'll recommend whichever one is actually right for your situation — not whichever costs more.

What we won't do is let someone spend money on a soundbar when a slightly different budget would get them something they'd be genuinely proud of. And we won't push someone into a full surround setup when their room and their lifestyle don't call for it.

The best home audio setup is the one that fits your home, your budget and how you actually live in your space. That looks different for everyone.

If you want to know what it looks like for you — that's a 15-minute conversation. And we don't charge for it.
